The newly formed Hilton Head/Beaufort County parent group will be celebrating Children’s Mental Health Week '08 with a proclamation by the mayor, and educational programs at various venues. Topics will include Safe Place for My Space, recognizing early signs of drug use, how parents can help, Positive Peer Pressure and Stigma Busting. In honor of Mother’s Day, the event will close with a ceremonial planting of rose bushes honoring the mothers and grandmothers who have lost children to drugs, violence, prison, mental illness or to the streets.
On Saturday May 17th Residents of Sandlewood Terrance, recently the scene of the fatal stabbing of a 19 year old in broad daylight, will be joined by community leaders and local agency representatives to offer a forum for the discussion on the difficulty facing our young people and their families. This is an apartment complex that has been plagued by violence and drugs in the midst of a world class resort that has proven to be just as dangerous to our youth. Drugs and crime and their impact are not restricted to a socio-economic group or geographical area and no where has this become more obvious that here in Hilton Head Island South Carolina.

Upstate Parents Network will hold a community meeting to announce their new Parent and Youth Support Network for Spartanburg County at the P.A.C.E Center downtown from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The goal of this event is to elevate awareness of children’s mental health issues with the hope of encouraging early diagnosis and treatment. Another goal is to eliminate the stigma associated with children’s mental health. Stigma is a barrier and discourages families from getting the help they need due to the fear of being discriminated against or judged. Upstate Parents Network will share information about the new support networks and take feedback from the community on their support needs. Author Kim Hix of “No One is Perfect and You are A Great Kid” will be available for a book signing. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Upstate Parents Network Youth Group.
